Christmas is in the air!

Hello everyone!

Today is the last sunday before Christmas, so I would like to start this blog post with "MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!" Obviously, to suit the situation, I will write about the importance of Christmas music.

Caroling has been a Christmas tradition for centuries. It's an amazing feeling to share Christmas joy with others through song and music. I have been learning Christmas music on the piano, and that has brought the Christmas spirit to everyone's ears. Christmas music is used for celebration and the feeling of togetherness. It's the ultimate Christmas gift to give, and to share with others.

Here are a few facts on Christmas:
1) The Nordic people had the original yule-tide traditional celebration, done in winter, because it was the time when all the animals needed to be slaughtered (because it was cold and there was no food for the animals to eat), so there was more meat, and, therefore, more cause for celebration. It wasn't until the Christians came in that it was called "Christ-mas"
2) Christ's birthday was chosen from the Nordic people's day for the sun-god's birth. (Jesus= son of God). The Nordics wanted to be part of secular celebrations. The Christians were trying to put Christ into the winter-solstice holiday. Christ was probably born in the Spring time.
3) The Christmas tree was also a Nordic original tradition, beginning with an Evergreen tree because it would stay green all year, through the cold winter. The Christians took that idea and put apples on the tree to symbolize the garden of Eden, which began Christmas ornaments.
4) The first description of Santa Clause came from the poem "The Night before Christmas."
5) Rudolf the Red-nose reindeer was created by Macy's for advertising during the holidays.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Music is Poetry

For English class, we have an assignment to write an essay on what music we feel is poetry. I am having EXTREME difficulty with this assignment, as I feel all music is poetry, and there is a reason for that.

When you think of poetry, what comes to mind? A couple of stanzas of words that don't make sense to you? Well, poetry is not limited to what you discuss in English class or read in books assigned for summer reading at school. Poetry is a form of art that humans use to express themselves. Poetry is grouping words that you love. Words that make you smile or make you feel relaxed because you've written down your feelings of anger, hatred, or despair. All of these emotions are expressed in poetry, and in music. Therefore, music is poetry.

Music and poetry share a bond that artists use to it's maximum potential. Writing a song requires artistic imagination and ability that few people have true posession of. However, any type of poetry is amazing to it's author. Poetry is created to act as a self-comforting exercise to let loose and share your thoughts. After all, keeping something bottled up isn't good for anyone, now is it?

Poetry is more than a group of words that don't make sense. Music is more than notes on a page. Both of these expressions of art are created to be enjoyed by whoever wishes them to be so. All music is love, expression... and life. All music is poetry.

International Music (Market) Place

"Hey soul sister. Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo, the way you move ain't fair, you know.Hey soul sister, I don't want to miss a single thing you do tonight." The lyrics to "Hey Soul Sister" were sung by America, Kazakhstan, and Australia this week in my car. Having exchange students is an opportunity with benefits you couldn't receive in any other way. For example, the true spread of music in all cultures.

Korean music is played in Mexico, Spanish music is played in the UK, and English music is played in Japan. That is a fact. Music spread internationally is an incredible way to show the spread of information and cultures. Music is not only entertainment, not only joy, not only a life, but it is diplomacy: the source of communication for/of lives.

Sublime & The Dirty Heads (REVIEW)

November 19, 2010, Sublime with Rome and the Dirty Heads put together an unforgettable, incredible concert. These are the bands that form the improvement of rock music for America! Together, the concert was full of nothing but screaming and love for music. I personally will add that I've made photos from the concert my computer and phone wallpaper because of it's amazing impact.

Both bands were amazing live. Of course being in Hawaii helps a band's attitude automatically improve :D, but, despite that fact, the audience was screaming for love, making Sublime with Rome AND The Dirty Heads fall into the rock spirit. Everyone at Kaka'ako Beach Park Ampitheatre had an amazing night.

What did you do your sixteenth birthday? A 5-hour concert isn't so bad, is it? My friend's birthday was the cause of attending this concert, and boy is she lucky. It was outstanding in every way. The entire weekend following the concert included me listening to The Dirty Heads and Sublime with Rome albums...non-stop. Now, that's the life.

Music in the Movies

It's about time I bring up the importance of music in movies, don't you agree? Sounds change the way a movie is viewed, and the way the audience is impacted by it. Whether it's sound effects or a theme song, music affects a movie's capabilities and success.

Sound effects bring meaning to an action. That is music's way of exercise. Sound effects bring impact to a movement, changing the way one will look at it. For example, if a loud "BANG!" sound is heard when someone shoots a gun, the audience will fly back in their seats. However, not all sound effects have to be loud and obnoxious. A slight squeak when someone is walking, coming from their shoes, gives the audience an idea of what shoes the star in the movie is wearing. If a head-shot was all visually given to an audience, the sound effects from shoes will give them a bigger picture of the scene.

Music also affects a movie's capabilities and success in a theme song. We all recognize Harry Potter's theme "tune" when we hear it, making it a trademark. Another example is for a TV series. Every TV show today has a theme song that is played at the beginning of an episode. This little song presents/ explains the show in a minute. Without a theme song, most TV shows would have little recognizable material. A theme song makes, or breaks, a video.

Now, when you add sound effects to a movie with a theme song, you get a genius invention ready for any audience to enjoy. When you go out to make your own movie, remember the importance of a little squeak from a shoe or a minute-long song in the beginning. Once you've included these aspects, your movie is on it's way to the big screen.

Crash Kings: Brothers Together with Music

When brothers play music together, they are bound to make unique magic made to be expressed. Alternative/Rock's history includes countless amazing bands, and, today, I am adding Crash Kings to the top. Antonio (Tony) Beliveau and Michael (Mike) Beliveau; Tony on keyboards and vocals, Mike on bass make up Crash Kings. The Beliveau brothers have a past of music. Their dad played piano, and grandma played organ, and Tony and Mike have played in five bands together prior to Crash Kings. These guys make magical music together. Then again, that’s what happens when you’ve been doing something together for a long time, with passion.

Jason Morris, the perfect drummer, makes Crash Kings come together. This is Jason’s third band experience with siblings, so he brings that brothers feeling to it. "Brothers have a much closer relationship and are much quicker to fight than strangers or friends who get into a room together to make music. At the same time things move faster because brothers tend to think similarly and ideas get out more quickly."- Jason

With writing songs, it's a strange how nature is involved in Crash Kings. Tony says, “I visualize a place where I feel complete peace – usually a place of natural beauty, immersed in nature. Songs like “Mountain Man” and “Come Away” came out of me being out in nature. Most of the songs start with a chorus. When I find a strong chorus, I start building the song, writing verses and eventually a ‘middle eight’ comes. Then Mike, Jason and I work out the arrangement. It’s really important for us to make every verse, every bridge, every part of every song as important as its chorus."

This three-man-band brings the level of "family" bands to a whole new level. Very aggressive and hard-hitting, yet meaningful and highly tuneful, Crash Kings have a loving, strong-supporting audience. Tony's vocals are absolutely amazing and soar above the average band's capabilities. Crash Kings are full of real passion, and you will know they've got talent when you hear their magic.

Sweet Serendipity

Well, first off, Happy Halloween, everybody! Now, back to business....

"Something's watching over me like sweet serendipity." Lee DeWyze has finally come out with SOMETHING to remind us of our love for him. It's been a while since we've heard from Mr. DeWyze and it's about time he's released some music from his new album to be released on November 16, 2010. Sweet Serendipity, his first single since his big song from winning American Idol. It is currently #56 on iTunes' top 200 which is nothing to sneeze at, but we can make it higher than that!

Sweet Serendipity, though more of a Kris Allen song, suits Lee. I would prefer him to do something harder, and raspier, to show the strength in his voice, but this isn't a bad start for the star. We all know he's had several albums released already, but American Idol has changed his voice tremendously, as it should, being a boot-camp for singers/musicians.

For now, our job, as music lovers, is to wait in anticipation for the release of Lee's album. Then, after the release, we must fulfill our duties and not only buy an album for ourselves, but spread the word and help get Lee back to the top. Crystal Bowersox is, no doubt, going to go far. However, Lee needs our help now more than ever. Listen to that single of his, and jump at the chance to buy his album. Agreed? Agreed. Happy Halloween, music world!

I'm the Boss D.J. (Sublime)

Back to the classics. Change in music in inevitable as curiosity increases as a result of technology advancements. However, the classics will always win. Rock is the best genre for classics that are timeless; Sublime fits perfectly into that category.

Sublime was formed in 1988, and, though thats not SO long ago, it's far enough to be considered timeless as far as music hits can go. Sublime and the Dirty Heads will be performing in Hawaii on November 19th, and without a doubt, I am attending! Stay tuned to see my review for the concert, of course, but for now- enjoy my praises to the CLASSIC rock band, Sublime.

"What I Got", released in 1996, remains the band's only number 1 hit (on billboard alternative songs chart), but the public has got it wrong! Sublime has amazing talent, and despite the break up after their original lead vocalist, Bradley Nowell, died of a heroin overdose, they haven't failed sharing that talent!

Not only has Sublime produced numerous songs made to keep the classic feel of music alive, but they have kept their genuine feel since their first album. Sublime gives you the care-free feeling to let yourself remember the classics. Sublime's impact stays strong to this day. Not only that, but it holds the title of reviving an interest in ska (reggae-like genre) and bringing punk rock to mainstream. With over 17 million units sold worldwide, Sublime is one of the most successful ska-punk acts of all time.

"Life is too short so love the one you got cause you might get run over or you might get shot."-Sublime

Guess Who's Back!

Guess who's back! Mr. David Archuleta is who. Absolutely every teenager has been counting down the days to his new album released on October 5, 2010 nearly 2 years after his debut album. "The Other Side of Down" is number 13 out of Billboard's top 100 albums, showing just how much anticipation has been involved with the release of the typical teenage girl's dream boy.

Of course he's had more recording time and more involvement in the writing of his songs this time around, so the expectations are higher. However, the true, genuine talent doesn't let you down! Along with the anticipation of the release, there were many on-edge questions about the feel David would have with this album. Would it be religious or full of those intimate teen sensations he expressed so well in the album bringing him fame? Well, now the questions have been answered, happily answered to the ladies. :) David is one of those FEW artists whose voices are limited with technology. His soul mix with pop music gives you goosebumps with a single note at the right time.

When asked how he would describe his new album in one word, his response was "meaningful." This album is a lot more personal to David especially since he was able to be more involved in the writing. David was inspired by day-to-day actions such as thoughts that came up while brushing his teeth in the mornings, or thoughts he's been having and dying to let out."

A truly talented individual is what David is; the ultimate teen "American Idol." Being 19, he's got his life ahead of him full of writing, performing, and experiencing music. This album is nothing short of the expected, and brings more anticipation for what's next on his fan-filled agenda.

"It's amazing to see how you can say so much with songs." -David Archuleta

John Lennon: Still Alive

The Beatles are a world-wide sensation brought together by their similar love and passion: music. John Lennon, lead singer, is not far from that. In fact, he is not only one of the faces, but the leader of The Beatles. Yesterday, October 9, would be his 70th birthday. This generation needs a "pick-me-up" when it comes to music. Of course, as technology increases, music is bound to rely on the "tricks" and "talent-boosts" that computers and recording studios can do, but there is no replacement for true talent. Either you have it, or you don't.

John Lennon had it. Lennon knew not only how to sing to his audience, but how to listen to them. He was talented musically with his amazing gift. Lennon played a number of instruments including the flute. His first instrument as a child was the banjo. His mother taught him how to play, then bought him an acoustic guitar where he shines. From his earliest days with the Beatles, Lennon's singing voice was recognized as distinctive, versatile, and variable.

Music historians Schinder and Schwartz say that the Beatles' influence cannot be overstated: having "revolutionized the sound, style, and attitude of popular music and opened rock and roll's doors to a tidal wave of British rock acts", the group then "spent the rest of the 1960s expanding rock's stylistic frontiers."

For young people in 1972, it was thrilling to see Lennon's courage in standing up to Nixon. That willingness to take risks with his career, and his life, is one reason why people still admire him today. What remains today, and what will remain in our hearts, minds, and music history forever, is the effort that John Lennon put in to share himself through his songs. He held up a mirror to be seen by the public, showing his true self: inwardly and outwardly.
"His songs spoke to, for, and about, the human condition." - music historians Urish and Bielen.

Let's spend today and these next few days remembering John Lennon and admiring his legacy. Agreed? John Lennon would have been proud to see his music continue to brighten and change lives today.

Daughtry Live: Hawaii 2010

Who's the true winner of American Idol? I'll give you a hint, it's not the girl with the title for season 4, though Carry Underwood did pretty well. The true winner was Chris Daughtry. His first performance in Hawaii was an AMAZING experience to attend. Playing at Ka'ako Amphitheater, Daughtry blasted their talents and sung their hearts out for a performance of a lifetime.

Daughtry is one of the few bands out there on tour that aren't drunk or high when performing. It was a nice break from the crazy atmosphere! Not to mention the fact that I had enough room to see my feet, it was an amazing, unforgettable experience to let go with Daughtry. The whole band was interactive with the audience, having us sing repeating lines and notes led by Chris.

This concert was also a treat with actually good opening bands! Kings of Spade and Electric Monkey happily and proudly opened their hearts to the audience. Kings of Spade lead singer's voice was incredible. Not to mention her amazing, incredibly tight pants! The fact that Kings of Spade perform almost every night every week is simply mind-boggling, but it sure paid off! Just opening for Daughtry is an insane experience!

Daughtry has an amazing talent, explaining why he made it so far after Idol. Chris was amazing live, and had the ocean of an audience "bouncing in unison", as he suggested. :D Daughtry Live was INCREDIBLE and I won't soon forget the feeling of letting go and opening myself into the feelings of music :)

What Did You Say?

Hello out there! How many times do you find yourself blasting the music, dancing in front of the mirror, and singing along at the top of your voice? A lot? I think so. Well, how often are you singing the right words? Not very often. I even create my own lyrics to songs without knowing it! I know that's happened to you, so don't try to hide it. Even today, with google at hand to search lyrics for songs, there are plenty songs where you can create over 10 different combinations of words that sound the same as the artist if you sing them with the same intonation.

I still remember one experience I had 3 or so years ago when expressing myself through Jonas Brother music. Whenever the song S.O.S.' chorus came on, I would sing some crazy version of the lyrics. Whether it was "pride of a lion" instead of "bottom line", or "my plan" instead of "I bled," I had my own words and I stuck to them.

Of course, there's that awkward feeling when you're singing along with your best friend and he/she sings the wrong note loud and proud, but the same principles apply with wrong words. When you're driving down the freeway, using your steering wheel as your drum, who's going to care if you sing the wrong words? Umm, everyone except for you, but that's what makes music connect with everyone. Music is how you express yourself, so why does it matter if you have your own way of doing it?

Your assignment for tonight is to listen to a new song from a new artist. Play it once and get the gist of it, then play it again and sing whatever lyrics you hear. After all, when it comes to music, if YOU think it's right...it's right.

What Can You Fall Back On?

The answer is music. Of course. It's an obvious response to such a question, but what's it's significance? What comes with falling back on music? Peace and tranquility. Whether you're listening to hard core rock/ screamo music or singer/songwriter tunes, music is there to help you through life's crazy roller coaster rides.

The older you get, life throws more and more stress and experiences in your face. Most people would agree until you get to be about 65, when retirement is in arms reach. However, retirement has it's own levels of stress and definitely different experiences. The point is, 65-year-olds and 15-year-olds have music to fall back on when life gets a little too out-of-hand.

Hippies.

What does that mean to you? Drugs and rainbow tie-dye? The truth of the matter is Hippies are their own culture. Their lives usually incorporate drugs and peace signs, but music is still there for them. Music is the most non racist, unprejudiced, and inoffensive friend you will ever shake hands with in life.

The Teenage Dream (featuring Katy Perry, as the artist)

Being a teenager, my job is to dream (and to stress out about everything). Teenagers dream about being rockstars, running away with their "true love", or doing enough to make their parents happy. The teenage dream, otherwise known as the "American dream" is to be famous. Katy Perry seems to have grasped that dream well enough to pursue it. Her new album, titled
Teenage Dream", explains the teenage dream in every song.

Katy Perry is known for her genuine creativity and colorful personality. She's naughty, no one is inclined to say otherwise, but that's why she's so popular. She sings out the good and the bad that comes with being a typical teenager.

In the music business, the second album is always the hardest one to pull off. The expectations tend to be high, the time constraints are usually even tighter and the audience tends to move on pretty quickly. Katy Perry's second album, "Teenage Dream" has fully avoided these problems. This albums could very well be considered "the best second album in pop history." Katy Perry introduced us to the chart-topping singles "California Gurls" and "Teenage Dream," then the rest of the album was proved to be just as amazing.

The truth of the matter is why this album is so much stronger and better than most other Pop artists' second album. The answer lies in the consistency of the artist. Katy Perry showed no really weak songs in this album. "Peacock" shows the desire, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" and "Circle the Drain" show the party-scenes, and "E.T." brings us all back to the original pop music. All of this makes up a a teenager. Music, parties, and lust is all part of being a teenager... making this album fully show the "teenage dream."

In Times of Music: A New Birth

Music.
It's a word.
It's a melody.
It's a rhythm.
It's a life.

Time.
It's a second.
It's a heartbeat.
It's a trip.
It's an adventure.

But what does it mean when you put them together? Time and music? Separate they have one meaning, but when combined- a new birth.

In times of music,
the world is calm.
Peace.
The world is enjoyment.
Pleasure.

Yet the world is strange.
Music is strange.
One world meets another.
One word meets another.
One life meets another.
When combined-
a new birth.

Musicophilia

"Suddenly, you hear a song in your head or out of seemingly nowhere find yourself anxious to play tennis. Things sometimes just come to us."-Oliver Sacks

Oliver Sacks is a famous neurologist and the author of Musicophilia. I was mesmorised by his connection between the art of music and the art of science. From reading the simple preface of his national best seller, I have created a new look on how music affects the human race. Musicophilia is a collection of essays and case studies on the role that music plays in the brain. One man develops a deep love of music after being struck by lightning, eventually teaching himself to play and compose for the piano. Another man, stricken with debilitating amnesia reawakens to the world every few seconds--only music allows him to remain in the moment for any duration of time.

Music has science, psychology, philosophy, art, and literature encorporated into it's melodies. "Although a teaspoon of Mozart may not make a child a better mathematician, there is little doubt that regular exposure to music, and especially active participation in music, may stimulate development of many different areas of the brain--areas which have to work together to listen to or perform music. For the vast majority of students, music can be every bit as important educationally as reading or writing." This quote, directly from Musicophilia, is flat out truth in easy words. Music changes the way our brain works and the way we are opened to other activities.

Not only can it change our brains' outlooks on life, but it's an LSD trip maximized through reality. Music takes us on an adventure of vibrant vibrations, melodies, rhythms, and tunes collaborated into an experience we deeply connect to. Whether people analyze it's deep core the way Oliver Sacks does or just listen and feel emotions, music touches lives.

There's Still Music.

"Sometimes I'm lazy, I get bored. I get scared, I feel ignored. I feel happy, I get silly. I choke on my own words. I make wishes, I have dreams and I still want to believe anything can happen in this world for an ordinary girl."-Hannah Montana

'I am an ordinary girl and I love who I am.' I'm not a huge fan of Ms. Montana, but I do respect her and her music. When nothing else goes your way and you feel isolated from life itself, there's music to keep you breathing. For an ordinary girl, life gets harder than you think possible. For all the wonderful things that come with being a girl, there comes issues with wanting those that don't come easy.

Life gets tough every day through little things, but what happens when no one's there to help you through it? Every girl in the world needs a hand to hold. Music holds it's out proudly and fully extended. Sometimes we all get lazy and bored, silly and happy, and make wishes out of airplanes, but that's what makes us live longer. Those wishes on airplanes and dreams we keep in our hearts and minds keep us breathing one more breath.

When there's nothing else, when there's no one else, and even when there's no life to hear it, there's music.

The Steps to Music

Music comes from different voices, instruments, and minds. What would happen if someone were to put those together? Answer: a miracle. Music is a miracle. It's not only a voice, an instrument, or a mind.. but it's all of those ingredients put together to make a cake of wonderment. Music comes in steps. Steps that, when followed, lead to a heaven of bliss.

There's steps to song writing, teaching, and presenting. Steps to song writing are more wobbly and unstable than the others. Song writing takes more mind to get to the top of the stairs. Song writing is the flour in a cake... a main ingredient but is nothing without other elements.

Steps to teaching are the cream in an oreo cookie. They hold together the outside strong and tight. Teaching music changes generations and keeps love and passion alive. Teaching strengthens minds of the teacher and student. Teaching helps music continue its development and inspire young lovers to it's roar.

And then there's steps to presenting and performance. These steps call few individuals in the right way.... Only few people hike these stairs without second guessing their reasons. They feel called to climb these mountainous stairs and get to the top to find happiness. These steps are solid, well-built, lusty, hefty, and rare. The steps to performance have to be strong and sturdy in order to keep it's hikers and travelers continuing their journey. If one of these steps is weak (self-doubtful), then the entire staircase falls to pieces.

When someone witnesses an entrance to this journey up the steps to music, they take that chance and put all their effort and life into getting to the top, for at the top is true peace, love, and joy.

Which steps will you take? Be strong every step of the way.

Music Memories

How many times has a song come on the car radio and you've had to shut off everything else, pull over, and zone into the music? Most of the time it's because of the memories that song brings to mind. Music has an amazing connection to people in ways many don't realize. Whether it's a song playing at your high school dance or a song you heard while reconnecting with a friend, it's music that jogs your memory and keeps you calm in times of insanity.

Mood rings were the "in-style/ must-have" accessory when you were 5, but music was always there to change your mood. Blues and hip-hop can't be further apart in genre, but when it comes to your mood- they both cause changes. Soul music reminds you of sweet summer loving and treats your mind like calm ocean waves. Rap reminds you of crazy high school/college dances where you had not a fear in the world. If you work in the post office or at a Hospital ER, when a song comes on the radio that brings back memories, you find your self at peace with the world.

Written in 1697 by William Congreve, "music has charms to soothe the savage breast." This saying, usually misinterpreted to "music hath charms to soothe the savage beast," refers to your soul and how music hast the power (charm) to soothe your soul into a relaxed state, so why is the world not at peace? Why are we not at peace with the world? The world will never know....

The Mourning Bride, 1697, by William Congreve:

Music has Charms to sooth a savage Breast,
To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak.
I've read, that things inanimate have mov'd,
And, as with living Souls, have been inform'd,
By Magick Numbers and persuasive Sound.
What then am I? Am I more senseless grown
Than Trees, or Flint? O force of constant Woe!
'Tis not in Harmony to calm my Griefs.
Anselmo sleeps, and is at Peace; last Night
The silent Tomb receiv'd the good Old King;
He and his Sorrows now are safely lodg'd
Within its cold, but hospitable Bosom.
Why am not I at Peace?

Mayer Movement

It's been 3 weeks since my last blog post and I apologize for my absence. I've been at God Camp having the experience of a lifetime. Making new friends, memories, and smores is really what summer's about. This week, to get back on schedule, I'll explain my title- Mayer Movement. It refers to the moving melodies produced by John Mayer....

John Mayer enrolled in the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, at age nineteen. He left school after two semesters and moved with Cook to Atlanta. In Atlanta they formed a two-man band called LoFi Masters and began performing in local coffee houses and club venues. Shortly after, Mayer started becoming popular in other genres than his own. Mayer started doing endorsements such as a Volkswagen commercial for the Beetle's guitar outlet and for the BlackBerry Curve.

John Mayer's albums have received praise from rap stars Jay-Z and Nelly. When asked about his presence in the hip hop community, Mayer said, "It's not music out there right now. That's why, to me, hip-hop is where rock used to be." Mayer's third studio album, titled Continuum, was released on September 12, 2006, and was produced by Mayer and Steve Jordan. Continuum includes the blues centerpiece "Gravity." Mayer has said that "Gravity" is the most important song he's ever written.

On December 7, 2006, Mayer was nominated for five 2007 Grammys, including "Album of the Year." The John Mayer Trio also received a nomination for their album, Try!. He won two: Best Pop Song with Vocal for "Waiting on the World to Change" and Best Pop Album for Continuum.

John Mayer's done pretty well in life with his love for music and moving melodies. We all have his hits on our iPods and computers because he's so amazing to listen to. He's one of the few artists where you can dream while you listen to their music.. those are the people meant to change lives in the world through music.

Defy gravity, make a memory, and live life with music...

Destiny...Cyrus

Smiley Miley Cyrus is no stranger to number one hits including her new album, Can't Be Tamed. She started out as an idol to nearly every little girl and now she continues that legacy along with making albums for older audiences. Her music video for Can't Be Tamed, the single, shows how much she's grown up and what she's capable of in her future- making this much change already.

Destiny was Cyrus' birth name. I personally think it suits her more than Miley. Her dad started calling her "smiley" when they went out to TV interviews, auditions, etc. and it eventually turned into Miley. Miley's destiny was to be an inspiration to girls of all ages and she's upheld that extremely well.

Even I, a well-retired Hannah Montana fan, continue to find myself tapping my toes to her songs. Not only every daughter, but every mom has to agree that Miley's songs deserve to be hits. No matter how much you try to argue, this country girl's chops make you get up and dance with a hairbrush as your microphone... don't deny you've done it.

It's a fact that people grow up but having the world look up to you going through your awkward stages, let's say, is not my fantasy. Superstars have different forms of their "awkward stages", of course, but you don't have a choice with changes. Miley Cyrus is still an inspiration to millions and millions of little girls while growing up on her way to creating an immense legacy.

Find Your Own Road

“There’s a reason the Beatles will never be forgotten. Find your own road.”

The Inspiration. The Truth. The Only. The Beatles.

The Beatles own the title- the creators of music. Very few artists obtain that title, but The Beatles have gone above and beyond. With music inspiring enough to bring you to tears, songs of all genres, and the two greatest song writers in history, The Beatles have changed music forever.

Fact: Paul McCartney wrote "Hey Jude" for Julian Lennon, John's son, not when he was high and couldn't think of any words.

The the theatre went wild. John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the two greatest songwriters in history, started what became the greatest, most unique and individual classic rock band in the history of music. By bringing the main members together by school, the world was introduced to insane talent. John Lennon was a "screamer" in his early years which is surprisingly unknown to many people today, who still hear their songs on the radio.

Songs by The Beatles are known to everyone, though they may lack the knowledge of the artist.

Fact: Paul Simon, Mick Jagger, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray had cameos in Eric Idle's spoof feature film about the Beatles, "The Rutles."

The group's name had numerous inspirations. Stuart Sutcliffe noted that a motorcycle gang in the film, "The Wild One," was called 'The Beetles,' and John Lennon reportedly had a dream in which a man appeared "on a flaming pie," saying, "You will be Beatles with an 'a'." The band members were also influenced by the name of Buddy Holly's band, the Crickets.

The Beatles have a history like no other. They have countless number one hits that are often recognizable with the first few chords. In 1957, John Lennon, age 16, formed the Quarry Men, a band comprised of pals from his school, Quarry Bank Grammar. Misery, Come Together Help!, Here Comes The Sun, Hey Jude, Imagine, All You Need is Love, and MANY, MANY more are all songs that kids today have in their iTunes playlists. The Beatles will live on forever.

Fact: Though she bought him his first guitar, John's Aunt Mimi discouraged him from a career in music, saying, according to John: "The guitar's all right as a hobby, but it won't earn you any money." Years later, John gave her a silver plaque with that quote engraved upon it.

The Beatles OWNED the music industry with albums selling out like crazy. Who would have thought a couple school boys would change music forever.

"There’s a reason the Beatles will never be forgotten. Find your own road.”

Hula Girls at Heart

What makes a hula girl? Someone who dances it? A woman dancing their whole life? A Hawaiian girl? Or someone who has a love for the dance? This post I'll discuss the history and vocabulary in relation to hula dancing... as you can tell, I've decided to connect more to the Island detail in "What's Hot in the ISLANDS." This way you readers can get more of a taste of actual local, Hawaiian music.

History:
Ancient hula, as performed before Western encounters with Hawaiʻi, is called Kahiko. Kahiko is accompanied by a chant and traditional instruments. There are many ancient Hawaiian legends that explain how hula was created. One story is that Pele asked Laka to amuse her because Pele was bored. So right away Laka got up and began to move gracefully, acting out silently events they both knew. Pele enjoyed this and was fascinated thus Hula was born.

Another story is when Pele, the goddess of fire was trying to find a home for herself running away from her sister Namakaokaha'i (the goddess of the oceans) when she finally found an island where she couldn't be touched by the waves. There at chain of craters on the island of Hawai'i she danced the first dance of hula signifying that she finally won. King Kalakaua was the first to allow females to dance hula in public; before him, women were supposed to dance in secret with no one watching. King Kalakaua opened a new life to these women and they can now show their dance and talent with the world.

Vocabulary:
Here's your vocabulary lesson for the week on Hawaiian and Hawaiian music history. :)
Kumu= Teacher
Wahine= Woman
Kahiko= Ancient hula
Mele= chant/song
Halau= school where hula is taught (more of a small group than a school)
Kaikua`ana= brother
Kaikuahine= sister

We may not recognize, accept, or aknowledge it. but we're all hula girls at heart.

'Till next week, my hula kaikuahines and kaikua'anas,

Spirits Have Spoken

Music is a gift. You either have it, or you want to have it, not either you have it or you don't. Everyone has music in them, but only some have the ability to perform/express it in a way most people find intriguing. Johann Sebastian Bach is an example of those few prodigies that very clearly have the gift of music.

Classical music is not my style of expertise, nor is it for many people, but not all of it is so boring you feel like you're in a high school classroom sleeping during a lesson. Bach is a real inspiration to a large number of composers. Bach not only had a connection/gift with music but with God.

Bach was so incredibly close to God, and faithful, he has underlying messages in his music. He would position his notes in his compositions to form a cross to show not only his listeners that are unaware of this but God of his faith. In a more literal term, every lyric in Bach's choral pieces translated from Latin into passages from the Holy Bible or worship lines for God.

Bach, as many current artists, had a close connection to a "spirit" telling them to share their talents with the Earth in their honor. Bach had a deeper connection with the Catholic God and showed that in little, subconscious ways. Similarly, a high percentage of artists we all listen to today believe something has lead them in the direction to perform and compose music for the entertainment of others.

Music is something to be taken seriously. "Artists" such as BrokeNCYDE are the type most reviewers call a disgrace to the gift few people possess. Either you have the deep, spiritual connection to music or you want it.

Kings of Leon

Since EVERYONE's favorite TV series, American Idol, is over this year, there's not much else going on in a teen's life as far as music. It's quite a shame but now we're stuck to iPods, iTunes, and magazines to find outlets. I was in Borders a while back and flipped through some music magazines. The most fascinating story I could find was about the far-from-Christian, home-town band, Kings of Leon. (the whole religion thing will make sense later). So, without further adue, I shall pass on a few incredible, basically useless facts of Kings of Leon's albums, start-up, hit songs, and more.

ALBUMS
Kings of Leon has many unique aspirations and achievements. One of which is through naming their albums. They've insisted from the 'get-go' that they're albums should all have 5 syllables. For who knows what reason, they've stuck to this rule. Their first albums, Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak (2003-2005) both have 5 syllables. Other examples are present in their more recent albums, Because of the Times (2006-2007) and Only by the Night (2008-2009). It's a strange request but by golly, they've got it.

START-UP
This is what really fascinated me in the music magazine article-their discovery. The Followill brothers spent much of their time on the road with their father, Ivan "Leon" Followill, a Priest, and mother who taught them when they didn't attend school. They were all told to bang on some drums during their father's sermons at Churches. When the boys' father resigned from the church and divorced his wife in 1997, they embraced the rock music and lifestyle they were denied from as children. Back in Nashville, after moving around a while, they met songwriter Angelo Petraglia, who helped introduce them to numerous rock musical influences such as The Rolling Stones, and The Clash. Nathan and Caleb, starters of the band, signed with RCA Records, who insisted they recruit more members. The band was formed when cousin Matthew and younger brother Jared were asked to join. They named themselves Kings of Leon in honor of Nathan, Caleb, and Jared's father (Matthew's uncle) and grandfather, who were both named Leon.

HIT SONGS:
"This sex is on fire...", meaningful song lyric from one of their main hits 'Sex on Fire', don't you think? Of course I was joking if you look at it in plain sight but underneath the deceiving, obviously rock, lyrics, there is incredible insight. Sex on Fire refers to having herpes. Obviously, sex IS on fire with herpes. When this single came out, the press swormed over the band asking reasons why they would put such a deep topic into their normally just fun-to-listen-to albums. Given the time and medical issues at that time, they felt it was necessary. It's a catchy tune either way, and it's nice to know even big-time, hot-shot music stars have a connection to reality.

Ever since they started touring cross-country, Kings of Leon have enjoyed the U.K. They are currently touring Live at the O2 in London, England and loving every minute of their continuing fame. Although they haven't quite kept up with their father's Christianity, being that they are ROCK stars and drinking most of the time, they stayed true to their roots. Kings of Leon is one of those few bands that you can listen to ANY of their songs and rock out.

I'm on summer vacation now, so I've lost track of the days of the week. Instead of posting this on a Sunday, i've posted it today, Monday. How different are they really? Well, until this Sunday, check out Kings of Leon on iTunes and myspace.

Beginning, Middle, End

It's over. American Idol season 9 has ended. America has chosen yet another idol, Lee DeWyze. Not only does Lee have a debut album expected to release on October 26th 2010, but he has already produced his single "Beautiful Day" with the American Idol record company and his own albums "Slumberland" and "So I'm Told." All are examples of his incredible talent and only prove his future in music is bright.

There have been numerous rumors going around about Lee and Crystal dating, but, sadly, none of them are true. As much as it pains us fans to realize it, the "perfect couple" is still in our imaginations. It's a shame, however, because Crystal is the only girl I, and many others, would be okay with dating Lee. Crystal has confirmed, 2 days ago, that she is single and thinks of Lee as her brother. "He's a small town guy and I don't blame him for anything."-Crystal, talking about her ex-boyfriend, while being the special guest on Ellen along with Lee.

What's really fascinating is it's not completely over. It sounds crazy to most of you readers, but there is a virtual American Idol show that has not ended. The finale is yet to come between Crystal and Shioban. Crystal's quite popular, isn't she?

The idol contestants are chosen on this "virtual" show by the audience, computer owners, who also choose each contestant's songs every week. Apparently it's quite common that the virtual show, with the same, real, contestants, contains better song choices than Fox's production. It's a stretch but it sounds like it could get very popular with more publicity. I'll have to do more research and get back to you, but there's your piece of useless information for the day.

Despite the major drop in viewers, American Idol was great this year. Season 10 is expected to have a staged rivalry between contestants to get some viewers back since, this year, everyone was TOO nice and no one really cared who won since "they all deserved it." Contestants say that every season but in the end, they all want their name called as America's next idol. That wasn't portrayed this year so let's hope next season has some changes. They'll need it with Simon gone.

We, the viewers, are the real judges so let's choose our next idol. Tune back in to Fox in January for Season 10 and back to teenislandhits.blogspot.com for next week's music review.
Love you all,

Days of the Music (Living in the Spotlight)

Monday, May 17, 2010- Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Show choir? No. Professional choir? Yes.
I've been in my High School Choir for 4 years now. It's been the most fun, greatest experience in school...the class I actually look forward to attending. However, it hasn't been nearly as professional as this year. For our spring pieces, we spent two full, long days advertising and publicizing our concert evening of the 18th.

Monday, May 17, 2010:
What time do/did you get up on a school day? 7 or 8? Well, on the 17th, I got up at 4:30am in order to be at school at 5:30am just for a "short" news debut to advertise for our concert the following day. It was incredibly hectic. We performed three of our songs, instead of four, because the NEWS INTERVIEWER was late. The rest of the TV crew was set and ready to go, but the interviewer/broadcaster was late! We were all a bit annoyed but put our smiling faces on for the camera. Sadly, we were told not to wave and say "hi mom."

Tuesday, May 18, 2010:
This is the day. The day we've been practicing for! No turning back now. Yet another event was planned before our concert, day of, to get more of an audience. From around 10: 15am-1:40pm choir went to the Hale Koa hotel to sing for over 800 veterans. It was quite the show, too. Since we were the "featured entertainment," we were served a 3 course meal that was incredibly delicious. We lead the Star Spangled Banner and Hawaii's State song, and performed our special song originally for our concert, Voices That Care. Since David Foster, Linda Thompson-Jenner, and Peter Cetera, writers of Voices That Care, intentionally picked a story about soldiers going to war, our performance spoke very dearly to multiple veterans.

Concert Time! The evening has come and the curtains are opening. It's show time. Everyone's in their pretty red dresses and pearl necklaces, and set for stardom (it's an all girls choir, explaining the dresses). We walk up to the stage and start off our concert with the classic, Star Spangled Banner. Following that, we have a short section of the younger, middle school choir, singing their songs before the suspenseful, tear-causing half. We close the concert with two songs featuring both choirs, middle and high school, Vois Sur Ton Chemin and Voices That Care. These pieces really set the night apart from any other school choir concert.

I can truly say a lot of hard work went into those two days just to give us a couple hours in the spotlight. It was all worth it in the end and I'm greatful I got to be a tiny slice in the cake we spent months slaving over a hot oven for. I can't wait till junior year when I hopefully return to get my next 15 minutes of fame.
'Till next week,

Born A Star

Not only did this week's contestants on American Idol get to feel like a music star, but a movie star. The 'songs from the movies' theme consisted of only 20 or so songs that the contestants had to choose from, not MILLIONS as Simon says, but the contestants dealt with what they had. This week was special on American Idol in that the contestants not only performed solo songs but duets as well.

Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox sung "Falling Slowly" from the film Once. Once is one of those few movies that shapes you as a person and sticks with you for the rest of your life, even in a subconscious form. "It's a love story that never happens"-Crystal fully suiting the plot. "Love stories" never end like this one... like they should, realistically. Once reshapes your way of viewing life; seeing it through a passion for love and music.

With choosing this song, Lee and Crystal have just about guaranteed themselves as the "finale couple" by showing great connection throughout the performance and harmonizing like they're voices were made to suit the other's. Casey James is great when he's acoustic but can't possibly be talented enough to compete with Lee and Crystal no matter how much he flirts with Kara, or how much she blushes as mrs. robinson.

For Lee Dewyze's solo performance, he sung Kiss From a Rose playing his home-port instrument, the guitar. I love seeing him with his guitar, giving him look more of a singer/songwriter vibe and more of a "real" feeling in his songs.

Michael Lynch, before saying his goodbyes, sung a duet with Casey that was also inspirational, but not at the same level as the "power couple." However, Mike was much more connected and "giving" than Casey...probably because he's just bigger and has more room for sound and soul. On the other hand, Casey is doing the best with what he's got, hair and country-loving voice, to stay in the competition.

It's all up to you, America, to choose the final two. The end is nearing with more suspense than ever. Who. Will. You. Choose?

The Ruler of Swag & The King of Cool

Being the American Idol fanatic I am, I'll base this week's post on Frank Sinatra (the author of the songbook the contestants on A.I. had to choose from this week). Sinatra is the ruler of swag and is mainly known for his trade mark: 'crooner' music.

Frank Sinatra started out growing up on the streets of Hoboken, New Jersey as a singer in musty little dives (he carried his own P.A. system). He got his first major break in 1935. In 1942, Sinatra instantly found fame as the king of the bobbysoxers, the young women who were his fans. Making appearances on Anchors Aweigh, Magnum P.I., and MUCH more, he quickly became the most popular singer of the era among teenagers.

Sinatra's first album released in 1949, The Voice of Frank Sinatra, and included "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and "On the Town," two very popular songs kids still know today. Sinatra is a multi-oscar winner, major movie-man, artist, singer, dancer, and inspiration. Although Sinatra past in 1998, he is still treasured and remembered as the 'king of cool.'

This week on American Idol, Harry Conick Jr. was the featured mentor. Being best friends with Ellen, he continually played along as she cracked jokes about him. Ellen's always a spirit-lifter on the judging pannel. It's a nice break from Simon and Kara who can't make up her mind...Randy's okay, I suppose. Although, "pitchy", as Harry put it, is getting a little old and is not the correct way to judge a performance.

Frank Sinatra is a genius in music history and will be remembered forever. People today, such as Michael Bublé, still try to copy his swagger but will never live up to the reputation the "king of cool" has obtained.
In loving memory of Sinatra's truly inspiring life,

Music's Extraordinary Faces

Every week, new albums are released with reviews exclaiming the amazing new talent in each artist's voice. American Idol, Glee, Rolling Stone, and other main-stream music magazines put they're view on certain songs or artists into words through singing or reviews. Music has many faces wearing many different hats.

Lady Gaga has hit the big town of Hollywood strong and hard with her own completely different view on fashion, music, etc. to share with every one of her fans. Rolling Stone titled her as "THE NEW PRINCESS OF POP'S CRAZIEST WARDROBE."...that couldn't be explained better.

You have to admire her for not caring what others think about her wardrobe, but there has to be a line between that and wearing a lobster on your forehead. Her albums are no stranger to the title as number one, but personally, I'll pass listening to her music... not including High School dances blasting Love Game in your ears when you have no other option than to dance and sing along.

The famous "11-year-old" (really 16), Justin Bieber is next in line. The "cheesy, teeny-booper music sensation's single, "Baby," starts out with hip-hop chants, "Oh oo oh you woah oh oh" and ends up talking about his first love at 13. No one's in love at 13.. that's insanity. My friends and I have established him and Miley Cyrus should switch voices. However, you have to give him credit for his music video trying to act older than he is with his buddy, Ludacris, rapping with him, "break dancing" moves on the Bowling Alley floor, and eventually getting the girl he was after. It's a cute, sweet, and early-teen music video.

What's not a surprise is music has some pretty faces that really make your heart melt. Michael Bublé has eyes to-die-for and a voice that you can listen to till the cows come home. David Archuleta gives you goosebumps listening to his angelic vocal ability. Elliott Yamin, Joss Stone, Stevie Wonder, and Natasha Bedingfield, similarly, are artsits that make you smile when you listen to their meaningful and cheerful music. Without these amazing singers and new artists being recognized every day, we wouldn't be able to live!

Music provides a spiritual outlet in a way anyone can connect to. Anyone who fits the criteria should jump on an opportunity to share their brilliance with the world.

Be sure to read next week's post on what else is new in the Hawaiian Islands' music world.
Peace, love, and joy :)

peaceofMYmind

Wikoliana is my father's vision. A vision to save the world in his own way... saving the ocean one at a time. This weekend, on Saturday, April 24, 2010, he hosted an event, with the help of his fellow employees, to save the ocean pollution. This event was titled S.T.O.P. (Stop The Ocean Pollution) and it was a huge success. With the local news, amazing help, goodwill volunteers, HPU spirit club, bands such as 'peaceofmind' and more, this weekend had a huge impact on saving our world's oceans.

To stay focused on what this blog is really about, I'll explain peaceofmind's newage, hip-hop-vibed music. To quote the talent, "we are friends. we are family. we are different. and we are the same. and it just so happens, we are just like you united in life like as if all one being, and held together in life by one rhythm, one laughter, one love and one respect."

The 'peaceofmind crew' does what they truly love. Each and every one of them are fun, silly, kind and good-hearted people. Every performance they show is genuine and passionate. Similar to 30H!3, this band has a rock/rap feel that keeps their audience in awe of their dedication to remember what they were sent to do. Their entire music playlist consists of inspiring, uplifting, and 'life-enriching' lyrics that speak to those who listen through an unexpected genre. They're not the 'crew' to play at a wedding, but for ANY teenage/college party- they're the band to call! . Currently the band is residing in Honolulu, HI and their concerts are rolling on strong with "Sam the Pakman" in charge.

It’s also worth noting that the band consists of really great guys. I highly support them and their dedication to music.

To end this post, a quote from the band: "peace, love, unity and respect to and for all peoples!"
Check out more information on the band and their tours at peaceofmindcrew.com
remember... this is just the beginning for peaceofmind.

The King's Legacy

Look to your left. Now, look to your right. AT LEAST one person around you watches the number one singing competition show in the USA... American Idol. This week's theme was the one and only KING himself, Elivs Presley. And who other than Adam Lambert could fill the shoes as the mentor that week?

Adam Lambert, runner up season 8, is the first openly gay pop artist to debut from American Idol. His first album, For Your Entertainment, was released in November 2009 by RCA Records/19 Recordings. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 in December 2009. It sold 198,000 copies in the United States in the first week. That is what's called a number-one in the music industry.

For Elivs week, the top 9 on AI had to choose SHOWMAN performances with heart-throbbing arrangements to "put on a show" to keep the legacy of The King going. This week, I have to say Lee Dewyze won the crowd with "A Little Less Conversation." Following Lee would, of course, be Crystal Bowersox singing "Saved." Both performances were amazing and both artists continue to be the weekly winners.

Tim Urban, otherwise referred to as "Turban" by Ryan Seacrest this week, was SURPRISINGLY good this week. Tim is known as the "cutie-pie"/glee singer that all the teenage girls are voting for, and, occasionally, the only reason they're watching the show. This week, Tim's arrangement was beautiful and the connection to the audience was very strong.

Now for the results show...

Adam Lambert's performance truly gave this season some seasoning. Other than Shioban, whose performances are getting annoying more than interesting, this season is lacking a big Wow-Factor that Adam brought last year. For his performance this week's results show, he brought lasers to his top-10 placing hit, Whataya Want From Me. I personally love that song and it's meaning is impeccable.

Adam's been a stage actor since he was about ten years old. His most recent performance was being cast as the understudy for the part of Fiyero in the Broadway production company tour and Los Angeles casts of the musical Wicked. Adam has been an inspiration to millions and it was an honor having him perform once again on the Idol stage. Looking like he came out of a green cloud in the beginning, Adam caught the eyes of all watchers on Wednesday night. It only got better... once the lasers shot on him and he came out of his green lighted spot light, he connected to the audience in a way that not many other performers could do.

Much like The King, Elvis Presley, Adam Lambert is going to have a legacy people 50 years from now will admire.

Stay tuned for next week when I cover either new released albums, more American Idol updates, or anything else that comes up in the island music world.
Thanks,
musicbytori

The Top-List in Music (Shinedown)

Aloha bloggers,
Last month, on March 6, 2010, Shinedown played their number one, newly released hits at Pipeline Café in Honolulu, HI. These insanely popular hits included Second Chance, Simple Man, Devour, Sound of Madness, The Crow & the Butterfly, and 45. Shinedown is an American hard rock band from Jacksonville, Florida formed in 2001. The band members included Brent Smith, Jasin Todd, Brad Stewart, and Barry Kerch until 2007 when Stewart and Todd were replaced by Zach Myers, Nick Perry, and Eric Bass. The band was signed by Atlantic Records in early 2002.

That's enough of the technical history of the band, now to the concert critique...

For any teenager out there, Shinedown is the band for you. They're not quite as sexist or indulgent as other Alternative bands such as Allstar Weekend or All-Time Low being as they put their own hard rock, meaningful twist on their songs. This brought them to where they are today as one of the top 20 artists in the USA. At Pipeline, the band had, what seemed like several hundred, teenage feet flying off the grounds, jumping in unison to the beat of their insanely catchy hits.

Shinedown contains two things teenagers look for most in a band... up-tempo beats, and good-looking members. When you put these two most important qualities together, you get a big shot at making it big time. Attending their concert in Hawaii, I felt like I was defying gravity. Many teens living in the moment did just that by crowd surfing onto the stage just to get a closer glimps at the truly talented singer, Brent Smith. However, one girl in particular got the closest.

When Shinedown was half way through their concert, the lead singer came down to the audience, right in front of the metal gate between the band and crazy teenage fans, barely visible with the dark lighting, and serenated a 14-year-old girl named Gabby. Of course everyone surrounding her reached their arms out just to get a tiny touch of the singer's glorifying tour jacket while Smith held her face, kissed her cheek, and sung right to her soul. As clarified by just about every teenage/early twenty-year-old there, a girl would die to be in her shoes.

That's it for this post on Shinedown's concert at Pipeline Café, Honolulu, HI. Check out next week's blog to find out more on music news in the Islands.

Thanks a lot,
